  • Levels of Clean | Clean Fiction

Defining the Clean Fiction rating system. What Level of Clean is your book? Introduction Why Levels of Clean? Let us start with a little bit of general information before we jump into the rating system. When I decided to call this magazine “Clean Fiction” I knew that I was opening a proverbial “can of worms”, but I wanted the title to be clear and easy to understand. What is the problem with calling it “Clean Fiction”? Everyone has their own definition of “clean” and that definition may or may not match up with mine or my reviewers. To alleviate this problem, I have created a quirky rating system that should keep you informed while giving you a giggle. This rating system paired with descriptive, yet spoiler free reviews, should give you all the information that you need to decide if a book is for you or a bit too much. - ALM You will find a more concise version of the information in this part of the listing. N NOTHING to worry about. Read this to your infant with a clean conscience. This is not meant to be taken literally. The N rating is the cleanest of the clean. These books could be read by teens or the ultra-clean book lover in your life. The books in this category CAN still include magic and romantic themes. Be sure to check the full review if you are sensitive to these things. All the following categories could include magic, romantic themes, violence, strong language, and non-Christian religions, but all of these will be specified in the reviews. Could be read by teens, may include magic and romantic themes, Does not include violence, strong language, and non-Christian religions. A Showing some ANKLE. A perfect book for the puritan in your life. The A rating is for books that are mild on the romance, mild on the violence, and most likely to exhibit positive worldviews. This is an “easy reader” book category that can include an adventure that is not too suspenseful. There may be warnings about specific scenes in these books due to the “3 strikes” rule we have for reviews, but these will be noted in the reviews themselves. If you are wondering about the “3 strikes” rule, read on. If not, feel free to jump to the next rating. The “3 strikes” rule of reviews in “Clean Fiction” magazine means that a book can contain up to 3 scenes/occurrences that may not fit into their rating category before jumping to the next category. If the scenes/occurrences are bad enough, a book can be disqualified from being reviewed. Anything of this nature will be noted in the review. May include mild romance and violence, Can include adventure, but without much suspense, an easy reader. P Clutch your PEARLS. Grandma may raise an eyebrow, but keep on reading. As the name implies, the P rating is where the action begins. This is the sweet spot between ALL the action and NO action at all. When I say action I mean: fight sequences, suspense, tense moments where lives are on the line...you get the picture. Books with this rating can include magic, romantic themes, and some violence. The violence in these books is usually short lived or not explicitly explained. I don’t know about your grandma, but mine is always up for some adventure. So if you are looking for books that take you on a journey, you are more likely to find them in this category. That is not to say that the following categories do not have adventure, but this rating is where the suspense begins. May include more action, magic, romance, and "short-lived" violence, Can employ more suspense. G Will make you GASP. Both eyebrows will be involved in reading this book. The Clean Fiction G rating is nothing like a movie G rating. The G in this rating stands for “GASP”, not general audiences. This rating is where the rubber meets the road. Action. Adventure. Intrigue. Suspense. Many of the books in this magazine fall under this category due to fight sequences, more descriptive romantic plots, mild language, or mature themes. By mature themes I mean subjects like: abuse, marital relationships, and unwanted physical attention. If your eyebrows are headed to your hairline, let me pause your moment of panic. The above mentioned “mature themes” appear in these books with a light touch. This is your ACTION, then glance away type books. MOMENT, then fade to black. That is why it is labeled “GASP”. This does not mean for general audiences, includes action, adventure, intrigue, and suspense. More violence is allowed as well as mild language and mature themes. B This is the Full BLUSH, People! If you are prone to fainting, you will need a fan! Here it is. The highest rating that will be included in Clean Fiction. This is as close to the edge that we will go before a book is tossed over the line of “no review”. These books include: magic, marital relationships, abuse, unwanted physical attention, mild language, more graphic fight sequences, and non-Christian religions. Though these things can appear in other categories in a “one and done” situation, this category will have more of the above without going over the DB (DOUBLE BLINK) line. The romance will be spicy, but within the bounds of marriage. The fight sequences will be more graphic, but not so graphic that it will make you queasy. The mature themes will be more explicit without being too explicit. These books are for adults. This is the highest rating included in the magazine, may include magic, marital relationships, abuse, unwanted physical attention, mild language, more graphic fight sequences, and non-Christian religions. DB You must DOUBLE BLINK to clear your eyes from being contaminated. Lastly, we have the DB rating. This category only appears here for the purposes of explaining what type of books/content you will NOT find in Clean Fiction. Banned content includes: descriptive sex scenes, violent gore, glorification of evil or evil practices, same gender partners, siblings that are a bit too friendly, random naked people flaunting their assets, all mentions of the pink fairy armadillo, any focus on errant eyebrow or ear hairs, the ‘tis bottle joke, jars of toe nail clippings, and the Bavarian Beer Festival. If the removal of these things is not enough to ease your mind, also know that we pray over and scrutinize what we share. We do our best to represent the full color of the Clean Fiction Community’s imagination while also upholding our personal beliefs. We sincerely hope that you can enjoy this safe space and allow these works of fiction to truly shine. What our magazine will not include: descriptive sex scenes, violent gore, glorification of evil, same-gender partners, incest, naked people, and defamation of our Savior.

Now I Can See The neighbors saw the beggar man and knew that he was blind. The man they saw had eyes that worked like every other kind. “Is this the same man? He can see! It can’t be him,” they said. “Yes it is me. I am the same.” is what the beggar said. They knew that he was born that way and he was not to blame. Though he was just a beggar man he now was not the same. “Where is this man who healed your eyes?” is what the others said. Our friend stood straight up, looked around and this is what he said. “Now I can see. Now I can see. All that I know is once I was blind but now I can see. Between you and me, this Teacher must be Sent from above to take my heart and from sin be set free.” They took him to some men that kept and studied holy law. They just did not believe that he had eyes that never saw. “A man named Jesus put some mud upon my eyes, and said, ‘Go to the pool and wash your eyes.’” And that is what I did. “Now I can see. Now I can see. All that I know is once I was blind but now I can see. Between you and me, this Teacher must be Sent from above to take my heart and from sin be set free.” The men demanded that he tell, “Who is this Jesus man?” “A prophet is what Jesus is, it seems from where I stand.” A second time they called me back. “Tell us the truth!” they said. “I told you once. Did you not hear?” is what the beggar said. “Now I can see. Now I can see. All that I know is once I was blind but now I can see. Between you and me, this Teacher must be Sent from above to take my heart and from sin be set free.” Didymus Once lived a man who had to have evidence. Once lived a man who believed in what he could see. If there was any doubt, he refused to believe. Didymus said that what’s real can be verified. All that’s real is smelled, felt, heard, tasted, or seen. If any doubt remained, he refused to believe. Didymus would stand his ground if the proper proof wasn’t found. He would come to the conclusion that it just could not be… “Until I see, I’ll not believe.” ‘til I feel and I see, I’ll not believe. Friends tried to tell him that Jesus was now alive. Didymus heard that they’d seen Him with their own eyes. He didn’t see for himself. He refused to believe. Friends told him they’d seen the nail prints in His hands. Didymus heard that they’d seen the wound in His side. He didn’t touch for himself. He refused to believe. Didymus would stand his ground if the proper proof wasn’t found. He would come to the conclusion that it just could not be… “Until I see, I’ll not believe.” ‘til I feel and I see, I’ll not believe. Then with his friends, all closed up inside a room. There all together they saw that Jesus was there. Jesus said, “Peace be with you.” Didymus could believe. Jesus said, “Don’t be unbelieving anymore. Come here and put your hand on my hands and my side.” Didymus said, “My Lord and my God.” He truly believed. Maybe proof can’t be found. Maybe He can’t be seen around. It is faith that makes you know Him. You don’t have to see. Blessed are they who do not see… “Blessed are they who do not see and yet believe.”

  • Ships, Secrets, and Survivors (Book 1) | Clean Fiction

Back to Digital Reviews Adult Pirate Fantasy Ships, Secrets, and Survivors (Book 1) Helena George & Sarah Rodecker https://orderofthepenpress.com Availability: Amazon, Author's Website Format: ebook, paperback Clean Fiction Edition: Spring 2022 Reviewer: ALM Reviewer Website: https://amylynnmcconahy.com Blurb: An assassin trainee fleeing his profession. A princess risking her reputation. A talking ship with a mad captain. Ravin should be dead. No one forsakes the assassin profession and lives. Attempting to evade capture and certain death, Ravin hides on a ship as part of the crew. Then his name is announced on Selection Day for the annual Scaera Dumeda, despite him never taking the entry test, declaring to the entire world—and the assassins hunting him for revenge—that he is alive. Princess Adima Radi Kashinda dreams of more than someday ruling Antovan. She desires to make a true difference for her people. When her name is called on Selection Day, she throws away her title, despite the uncertain future ahead. This may be the opportunity she hoped for. When some of the other selectees are murdered, Ravin and Adi are among the suspects. With the help of Ravin’s captain and crew, they sail away to hunt down the killer and clear their names. Can they catch the murderer when he always seems to be at least one step ahead? Review: This intriguing book blurb would not allow me to leave this book alone. I don’t know about you, but the romantics of a sea journey have a pull for me. That and after “The Thief” by Megan Whalen Turner, I have a soft spot for deadly misfit characters. This book gives me the same sort of feeling as “The Thief”, though I must say it is a great deal cleaner. ACTION: There is plenty of action in this dual-author book. Honestly, there is barely a breather between important battles/harrowing experiences. The authors achieved an action packed book that has little to no description of blood and death, though both are happening to and around the characters. They chose to focus more on moving the story along and character development than destruction. ADVENTURE: As a true seafaring book, there is a great deal of geographically diverse exploration. Though the authors did not choose to go into in depth detail on the locales and cultures visited, you are given enough to feel the adventure and wonder of an unexpected journey. For those who are sensitive, there is an element of magic in this book. I found the use unique and very engaging, but if you have an aversion you have been warned. ROMANCE: This story has the barest hint of romance. There are also vague mentions of unsavory things happening. As to the pirates in this book, you are left to imagine all the terrible things they can do yourself. RELIGION: There really is no mention of religion of any kind in this book. Having read the author bios, I know that the women who wrote it are Christians. That is probably why this book is so clean. I would say that there are underlying Christian messages to be found as well. Unfortunately on that note I must stop, I would say more, but I don’t want to give spoilers. FINAL THOUGHTS: This is the least violent/graphic pirate/seafaring book I have ever read. That is to its credit. Removing the unpleasantness of both foul language and unsavory realities, I was able to enjoy the more nuanced parts of the story. I especially enjoyed the removal of foul language. It was overt and rather hilarious. I also really enjoyed getting to know the wide array of characters, and each of their colorful personalities made the story even better. In a way, it was like watching a very well done play, unfolding one scene at a time. This is a refreshing take on the genre, and did I mention that this is just Book 1? There are already three more books in this series to enjoy! I can’t wait to get reading! P - May include more action, magic, romance, and "short-lived" violence, Can employ more suspense. A former Navy SEAL and the daughter of a notorious Algerian negotiator are sent in to rescue him. But when secrets are revealed, everyone’s life is on the line. Former Navy SEAL Jake Williams is the newly appointed head of a task force assigned to rescue a kidnapped American diplomat. Their only hope is Mya Amari, the daughter of a notorious Algerian hostage negotiator, but she is full of secrets and complications---something Jake takes as a personal challenge. As they grow closer, the threat to the mission escalates and time runs out for the hostages. Can Jake unravel the web of deception to save them all without getting caught in the crossfire? Mya Amari has been in hiding nearly her entire life to escape her father’ s enemies. But when her sister is kidnapped along with an American diplomat, she’ll do anything to bring her home---including walking into the enemy’s lair. She doesn’t trust anyone, especially the too-handsome-for-his-own-good Commander Williams, but when all her careful plans explode out of control, he’s the only one she can turn to with the truth about her family. Is it too little, too late? Review: The Captive by Julie Coulter Bellon is the first book in her Griffin Force series. It is the first book I have read by Ms. Bellon, but it won’t be the last. The Captive is the story of a hostage situation – the hostages are an American diplomat and the daughter of a notorious Algerian hostage negotiator. Former Navy SEAL Jake Williams heads a task force to rescue the hostages. Joining the task force is another daughter of the Algerian hostage negotiator, Mya Amari, who will do anything to bring her sister home. Amid rescue plans that don’t go as intended and flying bullets, romance starts to bloom between Jake and Mya, but they must focus on the mission. ACTION: Action is a big part of this story, and it does include some intense moments. It is a story about a type of war between people of different countries and includes a hostage situation, so some intensity should be expected. But, don’t worry, the violence is kept to short scenes and is not graphic and there is no profane language. ADVENTURE: The adventure begins within the first three chapters as the task force prepares to leave the United States to travel to Algeria. The adventure continues when Mya makes contact with her father’s people and she, Jake, and another task force member travel to another place in Algeria to meet with Mya’s father. Later, they must travel to a cave in the mountains, and then to another location as well, but all of this is in Algeria. ROMANCE: The romance is electric, but is kept to short scenes and is clean. After all, Jake and Mya are on a rescue mission. No time to delve deeply into romance. Their main focus remains on getting the hostages out. RELIGION: There is a hint of Christianity in Jake’s life, but it is not deeply explored and is not a main focus in the story. FINAL THOUGHTS: As a reader who enjoys a tense suspense novel from time to time, I must say I turned the last page of The Captive, wanting to immediately pick up the next book in the Griffin Force series to keep reading, even though this book has a satisfying ending. I highly recommend The Captive by Julie Coulter Bellon to anyone who enjoys a story based on a situation that could happen in today’s world and is filled with tension, suspense, danger, and excitement, with a bit of romance. • The Rhise of Hope (Book 2) | Clean Fiction

Back to Digital Reviews Adult Christian Fantasy The Rhise of Hope (Book 2) Max B. Sternberg https://facebook.com/maxbsternberg/ Availability: Amazon Format: ebook, paperback, hardcover Clean Fiction Edition: Spring 2022 Reviewer: ALM Reviewer Website: https://amylynnmcconahy.com Blurb: A new Judge has been chosen, now a new path must be taken… Leon Rhise has been chosen. He is the latest Judge to walk amongst civilization. Saving villages, slaying undead, and bringing the light of a forgotten God back to the world was proving to be no easy feat. Recently, it had become even more difficult after being branded a criminal. Hidden behind a heroic identity, he attempts to atone for his past deeds– including ones that left the Kingdom without its prince. After uncovering and witnessing a long forgotten truth, Leon and his friends rush to aid Princess Schalae who had once been betrothed to Leon’s commanding officer, Prince Gelan. A massive army of undead is bearing down on her home, and they must help her decide whether her people should stand and fight against impossible odds, or run and save what they can. Pasts and paths converge, and the fate of the last kingdom will be decided. But what form will that fate take when it seems as if all hope is already lost? Review: You saw the debut novel of this writer in the Winter Edition 2021 where I was pleasantly surprised by his wit and thoroughly enjoyed the world he created. Book two of this series does not disappoint. In fact, it raised the bar. ACTION: The action in this installment was taken up a notch. Sternberg has hit his stride. Using precise pacing and concise description, he lends a cinematic quality to the fight scenes that had me watching the battles unfold like a movie in my head. Though he often takes moments to add humor to break the tension, it does not take away from the dire feeling of the battles Leon and his compatriots face. This book is a bit more gruesome than the previous, but it was tempered by the author’s unique way of dispatching zombies, by turning them to salt. ADVENTURE: This book has even more of the air-nautical explorative feel that gives Sternberg’s writing a unique feel. Though travel is somewhat forced, it doesn’t feel that way. The main character Leon takes a moment to enjoy each new locale with beautiful descriptions that lend a realism to this fantasy realm of magic and creatures of myth. Through the story, you will meet even more of the peoples that populate this special world. All are rich with defined cultural differences and are appreciated in their own way. ROMANCE: No longer relegated to a sub-sub-plot, there is more relationship to be found in this installment. If you are worried, you shouldn’t be. Any romance that appears does not go past adorable. I would still label the progression a sub-plot because it is by no means the feature of the story. More of a, “by the way…”, situation. RELIGION: The spiritual lessons in this book are “chef’s kiss”. Still in the forefront of the story, Sternberg continues to put God in the spotlight. Though the divine help/lessons are overt, the pacing makes each mention/happening feel completely natural. This cannot be said about many books that attempt to do this. Sternberg seems to achieve this with ease. FINAL THOUGHTS: Sternberg has outdone himself with this book. The first book in the series was enjoyable, well written, and unexpected. This book was so much more. The development of the characters and the world were beautiful to behold. His pacing and wit moved the story along in a page turning fashion that I loved. Sternberg is fast becoming one of my favorite authors and I highly recommend you enjoy this magical God-honoring story. G - This does not mean for general audiences, includes action, adventure, intrigue, and suspense. More violence is allowed, as well as mild language and mature themes. Did you enjoy this review?
