Clean Fiction Digital Reviews Clean Urban Fantasy My city is under attack by shadowfiends. Apparently, this is my fault, thanks to the family I’ve never met. At least the attack interrupted my first couples therapy session with Cendric. Small blessings, right? Then my long-lost dad—yeah, the one that’s supposed to be dead—shows up to tell me that the shadowfiends are controlled by Raith, an old family member who’s here to recharge his magical batteries by any means necessary, including destroying Pittsburgh and me. Oh, and centuries ago, Raith picked a fight with the local dragons, so they’re after me as well. Now I have to learn my family’s magic, stop Raith’s path of destruction, and make nice with the dragons. Speaking of which, did I mention my oh-so-quiet secretary has eloped with one of the dragons’ worst enemies? Personally, all I want for Christmas is to survive until New Year’s. And maybe, a vacation. Read Review Clean Fairy Tale Everyone dreams of marrying a prince—except for me. I am nothing more than a pawn in my adoptive mother’s diabolical plot against the seven kingdoms. I was the chosen tool, her sharpened blade that would cut the deepest into the heart of the Kingdom of Baist. But like all deadly weapons, my wedding is a two-edged sword that could cost me my soul. For I am Rosalie, one of the adopted daughters of Lady Eville, and it is my duty to enter into a loveless and hate-filled marriage with the narcissistic Crown Prince of Baist. My choices and heart are not my own to give. Yet even in the thick of dire situations, beastly vengeance can give way to beautiful attraction. Read Review Clean Fantasy Princess Zhenya is in love with the rain. Heir to a century-old curse, she spends her life in royal captivity lest she be carried away by the wind. Her one solace is Yori, the handsome storm wraith who comes to her window on rainy nights. But he can never be part of her constrained palace life, where she must tread cautiously and follow the rules. On the eve of an arranged marriage, she makes a fateful choice that sets the curse in motion. But the wind she fears may hold the key to her freedom. Hounded by vengeful wraiths, Zhenya must risk her soul and uncover the truth about the curse. Or else she may become the very terror she flees. Read Review Christian Fantasy Bree Faro learns early in life that she can only depend on herself. Due to her feisty nature and unusual ability with a sword, she is educated in every fighting style imaginable and excels at them all. When she’s sent to infiltrate the city of Azriel, Bree does not expect to find her place among the Watchmen of the Keep, but they welcome her as one of their own. Little does Bree know that her new companions are in danger. An immortal creature lies in wait for any Keeper of the Flame, the city’s water source has dried up, and they are under constant attack from the Yirtzi - former Watchmen reduced to vengeful spirits, who sold their souls for power only to realize the enemy of Yahweh does not translate to the friend of mankind. Not only that, but the Watchmen are fraying. Hostilities come to a head when a Watchman is murdered. Only a Watchman can kill another Watchman, and all eyes shift to Bree. Bree finds herself faced with a choice. Does she engineer the betrayal of the powerful city, or does she embrace her destiny as a true Watchman of Yahweh and find the killer before it’s too late? Read Review Clean Fantasy An assassin trainee fleeing his profession. A princess risking her reputation. A talking ship with a mad captain. Ravin should be dead. No one forsakes the assassin profession and lives. Attempting to evade capture and certain death, Ravin hides on a ship as part of the crew. Then his name is announced on Selection Day for the annual Scaera Dumeda, despite him never taking the entry test, declaring to the entire world—and the assassins hunting him for revenge—that he is alive. Princess Adima Radi Kashinda dreams of more than someday ruling Antovan. She desires to make a true difference for her people. When her name is called on Selection Day, she throws away her title, despite the uncertain future ahead. This may be the opportunity she hoped for. When some of the other selectees are murdered, Ravin and Adi are among the suspects. With the help of Ravin’s captain and crew, they sail away to hunt down the killer and clear their names. Can they catch the murderer when he always seems to be at least one step ahead? Read Review Clean Fantasy Nadja’s life was perfectly planned: marry Luca, learn his trade, and have their children. But the night of their betrothal celebration, an accidental murder changes everything. Now on the run, she’ll have to leave behind the only life she’s ever known. And to stay alive, she’ll have to become something that defies everything she’s been taught to believe. But Nadja isn’t the only one changing. In Amrantir, where music is magic, nature bends to the will of the Musicians. But an echo from the past threatens the balance between Man and nature. With her newfound security in jeopardy, can Nadja evade capture and certain death? Can she unravel the mysterious circumstances linking her to Amrantir’s checkered past? And can she fend off the advances of the handsome woodsman, determined to help her? Read Review Clean Steampunk The Electrical Menagerie, one-of-a-kind robotic roadshow, is bankrupt. Sylvester Carthage, illusionist and engineer, has the eccentric imagination the Menagerie needs to succeed creatively -- but none of the people skills. Fast-talking Arbrook Huxley, meanwhile, has all the savvy the Menagerie needs to succeed commercially -- but none of the scruples. To save their show, Carthage & Huxley risk everything in a royal talent competition, vying for the once-in-a-lifetime chance to perform for the Future Celestial Queen. In this stardust-and-spark-powered empire of floating islands and flying trains, The Electrical Menagerie’s bid at fame and fortune means weathering the glamorous and cutthroat world of critics, high society, and rival magicians -- but with real conspiracy lurking beneath tabloid controversy, there’s more at stake in this contest than the prize. Behind the glittery haze of flash paper and mirrors, every competitor has something to hide... and it’s the lies Carthage & Huxley tell each other that may cost them everything. This book was recommended to me by a friend as a “must-read”. Knowing that she reads as much, if not more, than I do, I dove into Reeder’s world with glee and anticipation. There are several comparisons to “The Greatest Showman”, but though the flavor of show business might be the same, this story gives the reader something more. Read Review Clean Fantasy Their love is true...but is it real? Fear of inheriting his father’s hallucinations and memory loss have brought Jacob’s life to a screeching halt at age nineteen. Now he spends his days alone on the beach behind his home, staring into the endless Hawaiian waves. Mermaid Sevencea is eager to explore life above the water--and cheer up the handsome, lonely young man strolling on the shores. Forming a bond with him is as natural as swimming. All she needs are legs to walk beside him, so Sevencea disappears to trade for the necessary magic. Yet when she returns, Jacob is gone, convinced she was a hallucination after all. And the more Sevencea searches for him, the more she doubts what they have will last. Can love truly exist between land and sea? Read Review

Review: This intriguing book blurb would not allow me to leave this book alone. I don’t know about you, but the romantics of a sea journey have a pull for me. That and after “The Thief” by Megan Whalen Turner, I have a soft spot for deadly misfit characters. This book gives me the same sort of feeling as “The Thief”, though I must say it is a great deal cleaner. ACTION: There is plenty of action in this dual-author book. Honestly, there is barely a breather between important battles/harrowing experiences. The authors achieved an action packed book that has little to no description of blood and death, though both are happening to and around the characters. They chose to focus more on moving the story along and character development than destruction. ADVENTURE: As a true seafaring book, there is a great deal of geographically diverse exploration. Though the authors did not choose to go into in depth detail on the locales and cultures visited, you are given enough to feel the adventure and wonder of an unexpected journey. For those who are sensitive, there is an element of magic in this book. I found the use unique and very engaging, but if you have an aversion you have been warned. ROMANCE: This story has the barest hint of romance. There are also vague mentions of unsavory things happening. As to the pirates in this book, you are left to imagine all the terrible things they can do yourself. RELIGION: There really is no mention of religion of any kind in this book. Having read the author bios, I know that the women who wrote it are Christians. That is probably why this book is so clean. I would say that there are underlying Christian messages to be found as well. Unfortunately on that note I must stop, I would say more, but I don’t want to give spoilers. FINAL THOUGHTS: This is the least violent/graphic pirate/seafaring book I have ever read. That is to its credit. Removing the unpleasantness of both foul language and unsavory realities, I was able to enjoy the more nuanced parts of the story. I especially enjoyed the removal of foul language. It was overt and rather hilarious. I also really enjoyed getting to know the wide array of characters, and each of their colorful personalities made the story even better. In a way, it was like watching a very well done play, unfolding one scene at a time. This is a refreshing take on the genre, and did I mention that this is just Book 1? There are already three more books in this series to enjoy! I can’t wait to get reading! P - May include more action, magic, romance, and "short-lived" violence, Can employ more suspense. Previous Next Clean Fiction Magazine is a Christian Publication. Our magazine will not include fiction with: descriptive sex scenes, violent gore, glorification of evil, same-gender partners, incest, naked people, and defamation of our Savior.

Review: A magic system based around music? Count me in. Although it takes a while for the story to reach the Music Conservatory and its subsequent magic, it makes up for it with an intriguing new world. The beginning of the book hints at a grand scope of cultures and nations, starting with Nadja’s own Wanderer tribe. This book was enough to satiate my deep desire for in-depth fantasy worlds, and I can’t wait to see how the world develops further. Although this book drew out the plot through a significant number of chapters, it was easy to get sucked into Nadja’s story. She fights to succeed as a musician while keeping her secrets safe and avoiding getting too close to the charming woodsman, Pax. When her past starts to encroach into her new future, Nadja must decide who to trust, what to hide, and how to protect those she loves. It was a joy to watch her grow and find her voice as a woman, a friend, a warrior, and a musician. ACTION: This book doesn’t waste much time in the action department. By the end of chapter three, Nadja’s world has already crumbled to pieces with the discovery of abuse within her tribe. Nadja soon learns to hold her ground both in the classroom and in the real world, whether it be with words or weapons. From there, the action ebbs and flows with plenty of fighting, fleeing, and adrenaline-fueled moments in between. Just when it seems that Nadja is safe, something happens that shakes her world anew. Readers who prefer light violence might wish to avoid this book; although nothing is descriptive enough to warrant a Double Blink rating, there are multiple detailed mentions of abuse and physical harm. ADVENTURE: One of the best parts about this book is the rich setting. Although most of the book occurs in Cantio, Nadja’s world expands rapidly as she discovers more about her new home and the world around her. The references to other places and cultures sprinkled throughout give it a constantly fresh feel. Even within the walls of the music conservatory, the structure of the school and the magic system excited me enough to keep reading. The people Nadja meets also give her world brighter color. Each character feels completely different from each other, mimicking the variety of the world we see every day. It’s a refreshing treat to see such a beautiful example of world-building. ROMANCE: I wouldn’t classify this a slow-burn by any means, but Nadja does take quite a while to acknowledge her feelings for Pax. Watching him fall for Nadja and constantly be pushed away really touched at my heartstrings. The communication between the two is handled very well, with both protagonists using logic as well as emotion, which is rare in most YA books. And although there is a slight love triangle, rest assured, it does not fall into the common trap of wavering unnecessarily between two love interests for the entirety of the book. Some silly miscommunications occur, but nothing that waver into full reader frustration. On a final note, a later chapter does contain one romantic scene that is still considered clean but is not entirely grandma-approved. RELIGION: Not much is discussed about religion in this book, Christian or otherwise. There are hints of rules mimicking Christianity within the Wanderer tribe, but no other references are made to organized religion. The Mevocali have powers over creation more so than musicians, but they are viewed only as another race and not as god-like figures. If there is a religion within this book, it is buried deeper than I alone can find. FINAL THOUGHTS: I feel like it’s rare to see such a varied world with a different magic system than what fantasy usually describes. It was a fun read that both entices and frightens with its fun characters and serious misfortunes that Nadja experiences. Although some moments felt a little too close to common YA tropes, the author pulled them off well and wove them into a complex story that I am eager to see more of. This book earns a Blush rating through its descriptions of violence and one romantic scene, but it is still firmly within the clean category. B - This is the highest rating included in the magazine. It may include magic/marital relationships/abuse/unwanted physical attention/mild language/more graphic fight sequences/non-Christian religions. • Azriel | Clean Fiction

< Back Christian Fantasy Azriel Lee James https://leejameswrites.com Availability: Amazon Format: ebook, paperback, hardcover Clean Fiction Edition: Spring 2022 Reviewer: ALM Reviewer Website: https://amylynnmcconahy.com Blurb: Bree Faro learns early in life that she can only depend on herself. Review: This book has been on my to be read list for some time. The cover art is beautiful and the book blurb exciting. Once I cracked it open, I must admit that the story pulled me in. This unique take on a faith journey within a fantasy setting is full of twists and turns that will keep fantasy and mystery lovers alike on their toes. ACTION: This book goes to some dark places. The fight scenes are not too graphic while still being full of the tension and drive that an action buff will enjoy. I will warn that there is a scene near the beginning that has a rather intense gross factor, but I believe that it was a good set up to the evil being exceptionally twisted. If you want your books light on the evil side, this is not your biscuit. If you do not mind evil being shown in all of its ugliness, you will have no problem with this book. ADVENTURE: Though the story itself does not go very far distance wise, it does have an air of adventure with the remembrances of the characters and with the newness of the world that Bree has entered. James has built a complex world full of its own rules and quirks that are an almost allegorical depiction of spiritual warfare. I do not want to suggest that this is a straight “spiritual warfare” book, but many of the elements are there. ROMANCE: The romance found in this book is barely hinted at and very mild. This is compared to the implications of men’s “failings” when it comes to relationships which is a theme in the book. There is nothing described graphically, but several men fail in this regard. It gave me more of a feeling of “EW.” than a feeling of “Must Avert My Eyes!”. RELIGION: This is definitely a Christian book. There is an element of “faith journey” that cannot be denied. Yahweh is openly mentioned and described in all of His goodness. Though this aspect could have been more overt, the author was balancing several mystery storylines at the same time. This did make the book a little confusing at points, but each mystery you were given to solve did have a conclusion. FINAL THOUGHTS: The star features of this book were both the faith journey and the complex weaving of mystery into the plot. If I could choose a word for the overall theme of the book it would be “discovery”. This refers less to geographical discovery and more to discovery within the characters. Discovery about themselves, about their purpose, and about the direction their life is heading. The author does leave a thread or two unwoven due to this being the first book in a series, though I was very pleased to find no real cliffhangers. I highly recommend this book for those who enjoy Christian themes, fantasy, and mystery blended together. P - May include more action, magic, romance, and "short-lived" violence, Can employ more suspense. Previous Next Clean Fiction Magazine is a Christian Publication. • Of Beast and Beauty | Clean Fiction

< Back Clean Fairy Tale Of Beast and Beauty Chanda Hahn https://chandahahn.com Availability: Amazon, Barnes & Noble Format: ebook, paperback, hardcover, audiobook, audio CD Clean Fiction Edition: Spring 2022 Reviewer: ALM Reviewer Website: https://amylynnmcconahy.com Blurb: Everyone dreams of marrying a prince—except for me. Review: When I first read this blurb, I thought that this book was going to be a “villain” book. “Villain” books are not my favorite biscotti, but I decided to try it out anyway with the thought that I would quit reading when evil was being glorified. Needless to say, I finished the book and I am now happy to share it with you. ACTION: When it comes to the tension in the story, there are a lot of things going on at the same time. Some might find it a bit confusing, but I believe that is the feeling that the author was trying to give. There is not much in the way of actual action scenes, but there are definitely a lot of dangerous things going on. There are also several deaths involved with the story and the way that they are presented might be disturbing to some. ADVENTURE: The use of magic gives this book its feeling of adventure. There is some traveling that goes on, but the moments of wonder are found both in the use of magic and the interactions between the main character and her magical sisters. You will also find a nice helping of mystery to keep you reading. I was pleased that I did not directly guess the ending before getting very close to the end. ROMANCE: From the title I thought that this book would primarily focus on romance, but in actuality the romantic moments were few and far between. I would say that romance was not the main focus of the story, but instead featured the difficulties and mysteries presented to the characters. I will warn that the romance that does happen is a little spicy, but only occurs within the bounds of marriage. It is not too descriptive and has a “fade to black” moment. RELIGION: There is not much mention of religion past the opening wedding scene. FINAL THOUGHTS: In this book you will find a main character with unknown loyalties, mysteries that are so twisted up that guessing them is difficult, and a romantic duo that do not fit into the normal mold. I loved Hahn’s take on the traditional story. She took a plot that has been done and over done, and takes it to a new level of interest and intrigue. I highly recommend that if you are looking for a “Beauty and Beast” tale that this one is the one that you should start with. G - This does not mean for general audiences. This includes action/adventure/intrigue/suspense. May contain more violence/mild language/mature themes. Previous Next Clean Fiction Magazine is a Christian Publication. • The Electrical Menagerie | Clean Fiction

< Back Clean Steampunk The Electrical Menagerie Mollie E. Reeder https://thecelestialisles.com Availability: Amazon Format: ebook, paperback, audiobook Clean Fiction Edition: Spring 2022 Reviewer: ALM Reviewer Website: https://amylynnmcconahy.com Purchase This Clean Fiction Edition Blurb: The Electrical Menagerie, one-of-a-kind robotic roadshow, is bankrupt. Review: ACTION: There are frequent bursts of action sprinkled throughout the steampunk world that Reeder has created. Though no grand sword fights or paced off pistol duels are to be found, there is an element of mystery that keeps the reader on their toes. The mystery deals with murder, so if you are squeamish, be warned. ADVENTURE: I was a ways into the story before I realized how wonderful the floating islands were. Truth is, I didn’t realize that they were floating and that the train tracks traversed the sky (I suppose I missed that bit in the book blurb). This was most likely due to the comfortable “this is our everyday” reaction that the characters had to their surroundings. There are no outside characters to give the reader an insight into the difference, but once I realized what was going on, I loved it! The showmanship of Sylvester Carthage also lends to the adventure of this book in a more “beauty of the creative mind” sort of way. Learning about his past was sobering and gave the book a subplot that added more weight to the experience than “The Greatest Showman” was able to provide. ROMANCE: There is a romantic subplot to this book, but due to the proper nature of a pseudo-Victorian society, everything is mild and above board. Focusing more on themes of friendship and camaraderie, I greatly enjoyed the relationship between Arbrook Huxley and Sylvester Carthage. The growth of their friendship was the star of this book. RELIGION: There is an undercurrent of Christian ideals in this book, but nothing overt. The author is a Christian, and a reader with similar beliefs should be very comfortable reading this book. FINAL THOUGHTS: Loneliness vs. Friendship. Ability vs. Disability. Mundanity vs. Wonder. This story pulls on your heartstrings in so many different ways. A friendship between two gentlemen that could rival the depth of Holmes and Watson, a disabled main character who would encourage others who struggle to soar, and the beauty of a mind so enriched by creativity that it could not help but bring wonder to the world around him. This book is the complete package, and I look forward to the future of this series. G - This does not mean for general audiences. This includes action/adventure/intrigue/suspense. May contain more violence/mild language/mature themes. Previous Next Clean Fiction Magazine is a Christian Publication. Review: Short Story, Short Review: This sweet and spicy short read was a great mix of fear, folklore, and infatuation. In the limited time we are given with the characters the author gives us both their history and their tumultuous present. The way she achieves this makes the story not feel rushed nor unfinished.
