As a successful D.C. lawyer, Tatia’s mission in life was to destroy the sex trafficking trade in small-town America. She knew where to find it. She’d been there. With only apathetic foster parents to protect her, she fell prey to the local pimp. Trapped in the sordid underbelly of a small Texas town, she survived by sheer will. Her friendship with her fellow victim Cindy was the only light of humanity in the darkness until she saw a familiar face. Would Mrs. G, a mama bear of an attorney, still think she had strength and potential? Would Jesse, the young Christian tattoo artist and biker, still look at her with a twinkle in his eyes? Or would they both see only the mark of shame Eric had etched onto her forearm?

Review:

ACTION: This story goes to some very dark places. The action is abuse-centered. In fact, the book starts off with a rape flashback. While it makes for hard reading, no anatomy is mentioned and nothing is graphically detailed. Several scenes featuring physical abuse crop up, but the author never goes overboard with her descriptions. It’s enough that you get a good idea of the great evils that Tatia and the other girls have suffered without being graphic. You also don’t get any explicit details on anything prostitution related. It’s all of the emotional punches, and feelings of disgust without feeling like you’re going to lose your lunch over something you read.

ADVENTURE: Tatia’s Tattoo has adventure in spades, but it’s the kind of adventure no one should ever have to experience. The story switches between present day and the past. Present day Tatia is preparing to head off to Royal Children’s Camp as a volunteer. Most of the story takes place through flashbacks throughout her entire life. From her early childhood to her career as a prostitute right up to her eventual rescue and rehabilitation. This kind of adventure is not for the faint of heart. Word to the wise: Keep a box of tissues near you. You’ll need them!

ROMANCE: Even amid all the drama, there’s still time for a little romance. There’s clearly a close friendship between Jesse and Tatia from the beginning that blooms into a sweet romance over time. There’s nothing more than hugging and kissing. And those are sparing since Tatia is learning and still struggles to trust men after her horrific experiences with them in the past. There isn’t any sexual content.

RELIGION: From the start, you know that Tatia has a strong faith in God. This entire story shows you her faith journey, how the love of a former camp counselor, Mrs. G, helps guide Tatia toward a life-changing encounter with Jesus. Along the way, several people remind Tatia of the inner strength she has and that she has what it takes to survive. Special emphasis is given to the fact that there is no condemnation in Christ. An important message for us all to remember, but especially to those who’ve had to experience the horribleness of being trafficked.

FINAL THOUGHTS: This is one of the hardest books I’ve ever read. Human trafficking is an extremely hard topic to read about, but it’s important. The author handles the subject beautifully. She strikes the perfect balance of showing the darkness and the hard reality of what Tatia and the other girls go through while also showing God’s light penetrating through that darkness. There are a few instances of language, most if not all coming from the villain. I’d caution anyone who’s ever been in a sexually abusive situation to proceed with caution or to avoid it entirely due to triggering subject matter. For anyone else who is able to handle darker material, I’d encourage you to give this book a shot, especially if you’ve been wanting to learn more about human trafficking. This fictional story is a great way to get started. I recommend it. The experience will be emotional but worth it.
