Blurb:

The end of Earth was their beginning. Kaity Anderson was a new bride on her wedding day. Samantha Harris was an engineer who had given up all to follow God. Kaity’s reception is ruined when an alien gunship incinerates the surface of Earth. Rescued from the apocalypse by a strange prophetess, Kaity, her husband, and five others are drawn across the galaxy. While the prophetess promises God has a plan, Kaity grows increasingly desperate as their chances of survival—and water supply—dwindle. Samantha didn’t ask to be God’s prophetess. Yet once she answers the call, the Spirit leads her to an inhospitable world with Kaity and several of Earth’s survivors. Hounded by the master of the gunship, the Earthlings search for water as their alien pursuers and dehydration close in. Only God’s promise of a future in a distant city gives Samantha any hope of survival. But could the answer to all their problems lie in eight, mysterious orbs? The discovery of these crystals will change their lives—and the destiny of galaxies—forever.

Review:

When I read the book blurb for this series opener, I was very intrigued. As I am sure I have said before, there are very few books in the Science Fiction genre that I would consider “Clean” so I am constantly on the lookout for likely books. This one was at the top of my Science Fiction TBR Pile and it did not disappoint!

ACTION: The story starts in a whirl of starting action that will keep you questioning and spinning for quite some time. There is a good balance between dire circumstances and internal turmoil that will appeal to both the action buff and those who prefer character development. A few words of warning: Though the writing/editing is tight and nicely done, the author has taken a fluid narrative approach that may be off putting to some. There are several main characters and switching point of view within the same scene is common. It took me a few chapters to adjust, but after I had I thoroughly enjoyed the fluid nature of the narrative. It removed a lot of the usual and somewhat unnecessary fluff that is more common with switching from character to character, thus making the story move more quickly.

It should also be mentioned that the violence is not too descriptive, but becomes more prominent as the story goes on. If you are looking for a book with the lack of alien/human demise, this is not the book for you. If a good fight sequence is your morning coffee, you will enjoy this read.

ADVENTURE: This Science Fiction book has all the wonder and discovery of a Star Trek episode while it carries the weight of a Star Wars type journey. There are moments within each difficulty to step back and admire the beauty that surrounds the characters. Discovery mixed with determination. Wonder amidst the worry.

ROMANCE: Due to the use of many main characters talking about romance may give away some spoilers. With this in mind, I will say only this: there is nothing you need to worry about in this aspect. Any romance found within is sweet and nondescript.

RELIGION: This is the category that blew me away. Like seriously, BLEW ME AWAY. Stone packed more Biblical truth along each part of this story than I thought was possible in a work of fiction. Not that I haven’t read books that are similar in the Historical Fiction genre, but not in Science Fiction. This is where the author shines brightest. If you are looking for a book that walks the line between secular and religious, this is not the book for you. This is fully a piece of Christian Science Fiction. Period.

FINAL THOUGHTS: Though this book is the beginning of a series, there is a definitive end with an opening that can be used in the future. C. E. Stone has successfully created a book that combines the flavors of all of your Science Fiction favorites while also filling the pages with Biblical truth. I recommend this book as a gateway into the genre for those who may not otherwise read it due to Christian beliefs.
