What if superhumans weren’t considered heroes? When Scarlett Marley is attacked by an illegal super with fire powers, she doesn’t get burned, but now she has a fire-like glow flickering in her eyes. With superpowers criminalized, she has no choice but to turn herself over to the Superhuman Containment Facility, or risk hurting everyone she loves. Her normal life seems lost forever, until she is selected to be one of the first to receive the experimental cure to destroy her powers. In exchange, she must first complete one mission: Infiltrate and capture one of the largest gangs of supers in the remains of once-great Rapid City. With the cure and all her future at stake, Scarlett is prepared to do whatever it takes to bring these criminals to justice so she can return to her family. But this gang and their leader, Rez, aren’t what everyone says, and Scarlett begins to question everything she was ever told about the SCF and the fire flowing in her veins. The cure is her only hope for returning her life to what it was before, but is that life worth returning to after all?

Review:

ACTION: There are several action scenes throughout this book. Most of the action takes place towards the end. If you’re anything like me, you’ll feel tense while reading and hopeful that things will work out for our heroes. There are several gasp-worthy moments and some intense action. There’s some blood, but it’s not graphic. There’s nothing in this story that’s worse than most Marvel movies.

ADVENTURE: The adventure centers around a group of teenagers trying to cope and navigate through life with superhero abilities. It’s a tough thing to do when these kids have grown up with the belief that all superhumans are evil. This story is also an interesting look at good versus evil. Who’s telling the truth? Who’s lying? Things aren’t always what they seem. The story will keep you on the edge of your seat while you try to figure it out!

ROMANCE: If you’re looking for romance, you won’t find it here. Scarlett’s best friend is Ian, but there isn’t anything more than friendship between these two. I wonder if it’s possible that something more will happen between them. Time will tell.

RELIGION: Religion plays an important role in this story. Scarlett struggles to accept her superpowers. She thinks she’s a danger to everyone and is in danger of becoming evil like she believes all superhumans to be. She meets someone who tells her that God doesn’t make mistakes, and that God has given her powers for a reason. That message really struck a cord with me, and I hope it does for others as well.

FINAL THOUGHTS: I loved this book! It’s an absolute must-read if you’re a Marvel fan! This book reminded me of the Avengers, a group of teens brought together for a common goal that probably wouldn’t have anything to do with each other outside of their mission to rid the country of superhumans. It’s interesting to watch the relationships between them develop. I look forward to seeing how the story ends. Book two can’t come fast enough!
