This story follows Filimena, a girl reborn in a fantasy world with all of the memories of her past life, and her relationship with a boy born “of the black”, Egiedeyrus or Edy to her. It follows their story from their youth into adulthood.

In this world of sorcery, the blacker the hair you are born with the more magic you can command. Edy’s strong magic causes fear in those around him and leads him to dangerous places. Can Filimena’s past experience hold them together?

Above is not the official manga blurb, but I wanted to give you a taste of this four volume series. I want to start by noting that I LOVE these books and actually gave them a reread before preparing this review. Also, there are only four volumes in the series and these volumes begin and end the story. This manga is no longer serializing. With that out of the way, let us begin!

ACTION: There seems to always be something happening in these books. Most of the series is from the perspective of Filimena, who was reborn as a lady in a fantasy world. This girl has courage, but does not engage in any fighting. Whereas Egiedeyrus is thrust into many dangerous situations. I would say that this book definitely skews towards the female audience.

ADVENTURE: The adventure in this manga is rather limited due to it focusing more on Filimena’s perspective. Though there is a sequence where the reader follows Egiedeyrus on his dangerous trek that has the favor of an adventure game. It reminded me a bit of the meme, “It’s Dangerous to Go Alone. Take This!”, due to the amount of extra characters you are introduced to in rapid succession.

ROMANCE: This is a clean romance manga. There were several sweet scenes that made me blush, but not in a “Oh no! My eyes!” sort of way. It had the hesitant feeling of two introverts trying to fall in love with one another. As an extrovert myself, I was frustrated a few times with the lack of communication, but I think that this dynamic adds to the overall charm of the story.

RELIGION: As with most fantasy books that come out of Japan, this one falls into the goddess worship category. There are mentions of one character being “touched by the goddess” and elemental spirits are the root of this world’s magic. Also, there are demon-like evil creatures that cause problems. If this type of content would bother you, this is not your biscuit.

FINAL THOUGHTS: This is a series of manga that I could read over and over again. I would put it into the “cozy fantasy” box. While there is some action and a great deal of damsel rescuing, I enjoyed watching the distinct charm of the characters and their relationship with one another. If you have known what it is like to be an outcast and want the wonder of finding “your person”, this is the manga for you.
